Downloading and creating SUSE Linux installation DVDs

Here are the steps required to download and burn the SUSE Linix distribution DVDs.

Please send any suggestions for additional content to asterisk@surfcity.com.

1 You will need a user ID and password to access our FTP server. Contact me if you do not have one.
2 Using your favorite FTP client, connect to: ftp.surfcity.net , login and 'cd' to the hidden 'asterisk' folder. Before transferring any files via FTP, make sure your client is in 'binary' mode. Most GUI clients (like CUTEFTP) will do this automatically.
3 Here is a command line example:

c:\>ftp ftp.surfcity.net

221 Did you remember to test your web site ?

4 As you may have noticed, the combined DVDs are upwards of 8 gigabytes. Depending upon your connection speed, this will probably take awhile. If your download is slow, don't blame it on SurfCity Networks. We always have at least 20Mbit available bandwidth for downloads.
5 If you do not already have it, install Alcohol 120% from it's installation folder. There is a serial number in the 'serial.txt' file. You should also be able to use Roxio Easy Creator, but I have not tested this.
6 You should probably use a DVD-R for the Linux installation DVD. Alcohol will create a bootable DVD. If you have to use DVD+R, please let me know if it works.
7 Open Alcohol and select the .MDS file for the first DVD. Follow the instructions and create the DVD. Do the same for the second DVD, although I have yet to need any files stored on that DVD.
8 You should now have a bootable DVD. Make sure your computer has a) a DVD drive (duh!) and the bios supports booting from this type of media. You may need to update your BIOS from the motherboard manufactures website to get this to work. Some older motherboards may not support this at all.
9 I had a fairly big hard drive (150G) so when it came time to select the installation packages, my motto was "when in doubt, install !!!". Even so, when all was said and done, the total space used by the OS, dev environment, source, libraries, etc. was 3G.  Ain't Linux great ? Someone on the Asterisk list claimed he was running Linux and Asterisk off of a 150M Flash drive.
10 Here are the instructions to install Redhat Linux, followed by Asterisk. The Redhat and SUSE installations are similar so you should easily get to the point where you will be downloading and compiling the Asterisk distribution.
11 If you have any suggestions for these instructions, please email me.
12 Good luck !
